Holy Crap! I wrote a book!

Two years ago I decided I was going to write a book.

It was May 2013. I’d just published a blog called ‘Everyone’s talking about Cyber Warfare while Social Warfare is flying under the radar’ and people were … skeptical. I was challenging a fairly vanilla perception of social media and it’s capabilities. No-one took me particularly seriously, in fact I had more than one person ask what I’d been smoking when I’d hallucinated that theory!

What I didn’t realise when I set out to write a book that bridged the gap between military and civilian crisis communications; and the information revolution taking place around the world, was that the book-writing process is an incredible adventure in itself.

That single blog was the start of  both a literary and career journey that has taken me around the world and back again.  It’s a journey I’m still on today.

I started seriously writing my book ‘Social Media Rules of Engagement: Why Your Narratives is the Best Weapon in a Crisis’ in August 2013 as I spent some time off-the-grid at a Buddhist retreat on Hawaii’s Big Island. No phone coverage. No wifi. Literally miles from anywhere. With the sounds of prayer flags gently flapping in the wind, the smell of home emanating from a neighbouring eucalyptus forest and the resident monk wandering past every now and then as he went about his ritualistic day, in retrospect it’s rather ironic that I began writing about war and chaos in that zen Hawaiian paradise.

Since then, I continued my book writing endeavours stealing time from busy days where ever I could. First while flying around Australia with my then job and then in mid 2014 after I’d escaped the 9-5 and I traveled through Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, the United States and Europe.

Fast-forward to late 2014 and with Wiley Australia keen to publish my manuscript, the race was on to stitch together 18 months of ideas, thoughts and quasi-chapters into a single cohesive narrative.

On May 20, 2015  my book will be officially released and available in Dymocks stores across Australia. It’s already available on Kindle and for download in the iBooks store.

I’m really excited to be able to share it with you and to give you some insight into my working world. I hope you enjoy reading ‘Social Media Rules of Engagement: Why Your Narratives is the Best Weapon in a Crisis.’

Thank you for being a part of my journey.
